Sardines Can Get You Out of a Fight

During the Fremennik Trials, there's a way to dodge the combat challenge entirely — a bloke called Thorvald will let you skip it if you bring him five sardines. There's even dedicated dialogue for using the sardines on him directly, except it turns out he was just messing with you the whole time.

A Cat Broke the Weather Twenty Years Ago

Back in 2003, some messy code tied to the Gertrude's Cat quest managed to break the game's 'desert heat' visual effect. Nobody ever went back and fixed it, so as far as anyone can tell, it's just never worked since.

Jokes Nobody Will Ever See

Scattered through the game's config files there's a bunch of scenery objects with genuinely funny, unique examine text written for them — the only problem is nobody ever actually gave those objects an 'Examine' option, so the jokes just sit there in the code forever, unseen.

Nobody's Heard These Villagers Talk Back

The level-1 citizens of Miscellania actually have unique overhead dialogue for when they fight back against attackers, but almost nobody's ever seen it. They've only got 1 HP, and killing one costs you 6% of your Miscellania favour, so there's basically no reason anyone would bother provoking them.

The Steepest Hill in Gielinor

The steepest bit of walkable ground in the entire game is the hill between the waterfall and the Grand Tree — the height value jumps from the absolute lowest possible number straight to the highest in the space of a single tile.

A Ladder to Nowhere, Courtesy of 'The Intern'

There's a completely inaccessible ladder tucked two floors up in a dark corner of the Smoke Dungeon. The going theory among players is that it's a leftover from an earlier, scrapped version of the Desert Treasure quest, jokingly attributed to a mysterious 'intern' who supposedly worked on it.

One Goblin Never Got the Memo

There's a single cave goblin miner in the Dorgeshuun mine still using the old, janky pre-2007 goblin chathead model that everyone else moved on from years ago. You have to do something slightly obscure to actually trigger it and see it for yourself.

The NPC Who Got Left Behind

There used to be an NPC called 'Docky' who ran a boat between Port Khazard and Brimhaven for a small fee. When RuneScape moved from Classic to RS2, Docky himself never made the transition — but strangely, his actual boat did, and it's still sitting there in the game to this day.

The 1-in-256 Dialogue Nobody Notices They're Missing

The Fremennik NPC who ferries you to Waterbirth Island has a hidden line of dialogue that only fires if your character happens to share the exact same randomly generated Fremennik name as him. The odds of that happening are roughly 1 in 256, so most players will never once trigger it.

One Skill Was Too Useless for a Cape Seller

When skillcapes launched in 2006, Jagex just needed to find an existing NPC in the right spot to sell each one. That worked fine for 21 of the 22 skills — but one skill was so underused that the devs couldn't find a single fitting character anywhere in the game, and had to invent a brand new NPC purely to sell that cape.
