Old School Only Exists Because of a Combat Rework

Old School RuneScape wasn't part of some grand plan — it exists because players hated the Evolution of Combat update so much that Jagex dug up a backup of the game from 2007 and let people play that version instead. It was meant to be a nostalgia trip, and it ended up becoming its own massively supported game.

The Glitch That Became History

The Falador Massacre is one of the most infamous bugs in MMO history. A player called Durial321 found a way to keep attacking people outside PvP zones after being kicked from a house party, and went on a rampage across Falador killing dozens of unarmed players before mods caught up and banned him. Jagex leaned into it years later, actually writing the event into the game's official lore.

The Rarest Bird Nest Got Broken by Accident

There's a wonky-looking bird nest that's one of the rarest items in the game, and it can't even be obtained normally anymore since the trade route for it got discontinued back in 2016. Years later Jagex tried to give it a proper high alchemy value and instead accidentally updated its x-rotation, so now it just spins weirdly in your inventory.

The Bandits Have Opinions About Your Outfit

There's a poll booth tucked away in the Bandit Camp, but you can't use it if you're wearing anything with Saradomin's colours on it. The bandits will straight up refuse, telling you they 'don't like your attire' before shooing you off.

A Shop Restock That Takes Nearly Five Years

The crystal crown sold in the Prifddinas clothing shop is programmed to restock once every 250 million game ticks. Do the maths on that and it works out to roughly 4.8 real-world years between restocks, which is either dedication to detail or a very quiet joke, depending on how you look at it.

A Ring That Unlocks a Secret Conversation

If you use the Ring of Endurance on the archpriest unicorn found in the Hallowed Sepulchre, it triggers hidden dialogue explaining exactly where the ring actually came from — something you'd never stumble on unless you were pairing two very specific things together for no obvious reason.

A Definition of 'Underground' That Never Updated

Ever notice how some monsters drop nature talismans while others drop chaos ones for seemingly no reason? Monsters in areas the game classifies as 'underground' are supposed to drop chaos talismans, but that classification hasn't been touched since 2003, so it's broken in all sorts of inconsistent ways across the map.

The Wilderness Used to Be Somebody's Empire

Long before it was the lawless PvP zone everyone avoids, the land now called the Wilderness was actually the heart of Zaros's empire, a stretch of Forinthry that spread across huge parts of the map. It only became the wasteland it is today after Zamorak overthrew him and tore the whole region apart in the fighting that followed.

The Rules That Kept the Gods Out

The Edicts of Guthix get mentioned constantly across quests, but they're not just an ancient law — they're a literal magical barrier Guthix put up after the God Wars to physically stop other gods from setting foot back on Gielinor. It's basically the only reason the world's had any peace at all since he went back to sleep.

Where the Tears of Guthix Actually Came From

That minigame everyone does for easy experience isn't just a random cave with glowing rocks. According to the lore, Guthix wept over the devastation left behind by the God Wars in a cavern under southern Misthalin, and the surrounding rock supposedly wept with him — which is where the Tears of Guthix are said to actually come from.
