Silco's Rise Mirrors Zaun's Own History

Silco isn't just a random crime boss, his entire arc, clawing his way up from nothing to eventually ruling over Zaun's underworld, is presented as a direct product of the neglect and desperation baked into Zaun's founding. He becomes exactly the kind of ruthless figure that a city built on being ignored ends up producing.

It All Started on a Train

The whole show basically got greenlit because of a train ride. Moffat and Gatiss were chatting about how much they both loved Holmes on the way to the Doctor Who offices in Cardiff, and Moffat went home and told his wife Sue Vertue about it. She's the one who pushed them to actually pitch it to the BBC.

Pirates in Your Happy Meal

The film got the full fast-food tie-in treatment, with McDonald's releasing a set of eight Happy Meal toys based on it, plus another set a couple of years later blending in elements from the theme park ride too.

A Lost Island in Sholazar Basin

Swim out into Bittertide Lake in Sholazar Basin and you'll find a tiny island with a hatch set into the ground. A plaque beside it reads a string of numbers that's a cheeky one-digit-higher twist on the famous recurring sequence from the TV show Lost.

Sardines Can Get You Out of a Fight

During the Fremennik Trials, there's a way to dodge the combat challenge entirely — a bloke called Thorvald will let you skip it if you bring him five sardines. There's even dedicated dialogue for using the sardines on him directly, except it turns out he was just messing with you the whole time.

Vi's 'Cupcake' Line Was There From the First Draft

The moment Vi tells Caitlyn 'you're hot, cupcake' wasn't a late addition, it was in the scripts from the very beginning. The writers fought to keep that line in specifically because it's one of the only times either woman says out loud that she's attracted to the other, rather than leaving it all to subtext.

Vacant Is Hiding Inside Verdansk

Vacant got its own full multiplayer remake eventually, but a chunk of the original map is also tucked away near Port on the Verdansk map in Warzone, for anyone who fancies a nostalgic detour.

Seoul Rolled Out the Red Carpet

The Seoul city government offered the production some pretty generous tax incentives to film there, which is a big part of why the Korean set pieces made it into the finished movie at all.

Roiland's Video Game Studio Named After Squanchy

In 2016 Justin Roiland launched his own game studio and called it Squanchtendo, a mashup of the show's promiscuous alien Squanchy and Nintendo. He later renamed it Squanch Games at the end of 2017, and it went on to make the VR title Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality and the sci-fi comedy game High on Life.

Liquorice Mouthwash for the Orcs

Since Orcs bleed black in the film, Jackson decided their mouths should look black too, so every actor playing an Orc had to rinse with special liquorice mouthwash before each take.
