They Deliberately Didn't Adapt One Specific Game
Jonathan Nolan has said outright that the writers never wanted to just retell one of the existing games beat for beat. Because every Fallout game already tells its own self-contained story in a different city, the team decided the show would earn its place by doing the same thing rather than adapting an existing plot.
Nolan North Wrote a Behind-the-Scenes Book
To tie in with the launch, Nathan Drake's own voice actor Nolan North put together a 128-page coffee table book called Drake's Journal, packed with over 500 photos from the motion capture stage. It even had QR codes printed inside that linked out to dozens of uncut mocap videos, which was a pretty novel idea for 2011.
