As you were delivering a package to the New Vegas strip, a strange man stops you and captures you, only for you to be shot in the head. He leaves you for dead and takes your package. You awaken in a clinic in the town of Goodsprings, where a doctor heals you and helps you get back on your feet. You have to defeat this strange man and have him pay for his crimes and find out what's in the package.. or betray the residents of Goodsprings and other small towns for their money and property... it's all up to you.

A Perk Named After a 1950s Doo-Wop Hit

The Mister Sandman perk, which lets you kill sleeping targets silently, takes its name from the 1954 song of the same name by The Chordettes. Given how much of the game's soundtrack and quest naming leans on 50s and 60s music, it fits right in with everything else going on around it.

That Old Please Stand By Screen

Right at the start of episode one, Vault 33's monitors flash up that familiar 'Please Stand By' card before the wedding kicks off. It's the same holding screen the games have used for decades on their loading and title screens, so if you've ever booted up a Fallout game you'll have seen this exact graphic staring back at you before.

Born From a Cancelled Game

Long before New Vegas existed, Black Isle was working on a game called Van Buren that got cancelled. A surprising amount of that scrapped project made it into New Vegas anyway, most notably Caesar's Legion, which was originally written for Van Buren. Even the Big Empty from Old World Blues traces back to an early Van Buren location idea.

A Deep Cut Wrestling Reference

During the G.I. Blues quest you can find three men camped out named Roy, Wayne, and Farris. Put those together and you get Roy Wayne Farris, the real name of 80s wrestling star The Honky Tonk Man. It's such an obscure reference that even people who've played the game dozens of times tend to miss it completely.
