Sauron Was Almost Going to Duel Aragorn in Person

An early plan had Sauron stepping out to physically fight Aragorn during the battle at the Black Gate. That sequence was scrapped and replaced with a troll, which is why the Extended Edition's Palantir scene still shows Sauron seated in solid form rather than just the fiery eye.

Justin Theroux's Only Solo Screenwriting Credit

The script is credited entirely to actor Justin Theroux, who's better known these days for The Leftovers. This remains the only film he's ever written completely on his own, though he did share a co-writing credit on Tropic Thunder alongside Robert Downey Jr.

Touching the Spears Was Bernard Hill's Idea

That moment where Theoden reaches out to touch each of his soldiers' spears before the Pelennor Fields charge wasn't in the script. Bernard Hill came up with it himself, and it became one of the film's quietly powerful beats.

Anamaria Never Came Back

Anamaria was actually written back into the script for this film, but Zoe Saldaña turned it down. She's said her time on the first movie was rough enough that it nearly put her off acting altogether, and she decided it wasn't worth returning for.

The Real Peaky Blinders Had Already Faded by the 1920s

In the show, the Shelbys run Birmingham unchallenged through the 1920s. In reality, the actual Peaky Blinders gang peaked back in the 1890s, and by the time the series is set, a much bigger outfit called the Birmingham Gang had taken over the streets instead.

Fifty Oysters for a Better Lung

Scattered across the map are fifty collectible oysters, and hunting down every single one doesn't just unlock an achievement-style reward, it also maxes out CJ's lung capacity and sex appeal stats in one go. A nice payoff for the kind of completionist who checks every rock along the coastline.

Wakanda Shows Up on Fury's Map

Right near the end of the film there's a map behind Nick Fury marking various locations of interest to SHIELD, and one of the pins sits squarely in the region that would later be revealed as Wakanda.

Book Three Sends Joe Somewhere Totally Different

The You Love Me novel takes Joe's story in a very different direction than season three. In the book he's just out of prison and relocates to Bainbridge Island in Washington after the Quinn family pays him off, splitting from Love entirely rather than raising baby Henry with her in the suburbs.

A Crown Older Than The Ice King Himself

Ice King's crown wasn't made for him at all. The show eventually reveals it was forged way back in the Mesozoic Era by an ice elemental named Urgence Evergreen, meant to stop an evil version of the catalyst comet from wiping out life on Earth. Simon Petrikov just happened to be the poor guy who found it centuries later in a Scandinavian dockyard.

A Diablo Shout-Out in Fyresdal

Walk into the butcher's house in Fyresdal for the first time and he'll bellow 'Fresh Meat' the moment he spots you, the exact same line The Butcher shouts the first time you run into him in every Diablo game.
