An open world, sandbox game that is randomly generated. Players mine for minerals, build shelters, and fight off monsters that come at night in Survival Mode. The game also features a Creative Mode, where the player is invincible, has an unlimited supply of everything, can fly, and break blocks easily.

The Elytra, Minecraft's glider wings that let you swan-dive off mountains and soar across the map, plays almost identically to the Wing Cap power-up from Super Mario 64. It's not officially billed as a crossover, but the gliding feel is close enough that plenty of long-time Mario fans clocked the resemblance the moment the update dropped.
Dig into the language settings and Minecraft isn't just offering the usual list of real-world languages, you can switch your whole interface over to Pirate Speak, Shakespearean English, or even Klingon if you're feeling committed. It's a small detail that says a lot about how Notch wanted the game to feel silly and welcoming rather than sterile.
It's not just the Ghast, that eerie Enderman noise you hear right before it teleports and lunges at you traces back to the same batch of cat recordings the developers used for other mobs. Layer and pitch-shift a startled cat enough times and apparently you get one of the most feared sounds in the entire game.
As huge as Minecraft's sales numbers are, it still isn't technically the single best-selling game of all time once you count Tetris, which has racked up over 520 million units across its many different versions since the 1980s. Minecraft holds the record for best-selling single title from one continuous release, which is its own remarkable feat given it's had virtually no sequels or reboots to pad the numbers.
