Herobrine has to be the most famous thing in Minecraft that was never actually in Minecraft. The whole legend traces back to a 2010 forum post claiming a white-eyed figure was haunting someone's world, supposedly the ghost of Notch's dead brother. Notch has flat out said he doesn't have one, but the myth took on a life of its own anyway and is still one of the game's most enduring urban legends.
Mojang leaned into the Herobrine hysteria so hard that they've written 'Removed Herobrine' into the changelog of pretty much every major update since 2012, despite the character never once existing in the game's code. It's become a running joke between the developers and the community, a wink to a myth that refuses to die.
That unsettling stillness the Enderman has, staring you down before it snaps into a rage, wasn't an accident. Notch has acknowledged the mob's look and behaviour were shaped by Slenderman, the tall, faceless internet legend that was already spreading through horror forums when the Enderman was designed for the game's Adventure Update.
Those unnerving Ghast screeches drifting through the Nether aren't some digitally engineered monster sound, they're a real cat. Composer C418 apparently caught his own cat's startled meow on a recording session, and rather than replace it, that panicked yowl got worked straight into the Ghast's audio and has stayed there ever since.
The End Poem, that dreamy nine-minute scroll of text you get after beating the Ender Dragon, was written by novelist Julian Gough as a favour to his friend Notch. He never actually signed the contract handing the rights over to Mojang, and in 2022, after a falling out with the company, he released the whole poem into the public domain rather than let Microsoft claim it.
Grab a name tag, scribble 'Dinnerbone' or 'Grumm' onto it, and slap it on almost any mob in the game, and it'll flop upside down for the rest of its life. It's a tribute to Mojang's technical director Nathan 'Dinnerbone' Adams, whose own online avatar has always been rendered flipped, and the joke stuck so well it's become a permanent feature rather than a bug.
Naming a sheep 'jeb_' with a name tag turns its wool into a slow, glitchy cycle through every dye colour in the game, like a tiny woolly disco ball wandering your farm. It's a little tip of the hat to Mojang's Jens 'Jeb' Bergensten, though shearing one still just gives you the sheep's original, boring colour of wool.
Name a rabbit 'Toast' and it swaps to a unique brown and white skin that has nothing to do with breakfast. It's actually a quiet memorial to a real rabbit that went missing from its owner, a Minecraft forum user, back when the mob was being added, and Mojang decided to bake the tribute permanently into the game.
Rename a Vindicator 'Johnny' and it stops caring about teams entirely, turning hostile toward every other mob in the game except Ghasts and fellow illagers. It's a direct nod to Jack Nicholson's iconic 'Here's Johnny!' moment from The Shining, and once that name tag goes on there's no calming him back down.
Bake your very first cake in Minecraft and the achievement you unlock is simply called 'The Lie', a cheeky little wink at Portal's endlessly quotable line about the cake being a lie. It's easy to miss if you're not already in on the joke, but once you know it's there you can't unsee it every time you go for that early-game achievement.
