The Gravemind's telepathic voice isn't only heard by the Chief. According to the wider lore, a Marine once overheard it speaking through nearby combat forms and was driven to insanity by what's known as the logic plague, implied to have taken his own life off-screen as a result. It's a small aside that hints at just how psychologically dangerous simply being near the Flood's collective mind can be.
Bungie deliberately kept the full scope of Halo 3's secrets a mystery even after launch. When fans asked the community team directly whether every easter egg had been found, the response was blunt: players would never find them all, and Bungie wouldn't be giving out hints, because the mystery was part of the magic.
Tucked inside the defensive base on the multiplayer map High Ground is a small machine that quietly taps out a message in Morse code. It was spotted as far back as the Halo 3 multiplayer beta, and the elevator music playing in the same room hides its own layer of secrecy for anyone patient enough to sit and listen.
Throughout the campaign, Cortana and the Gravemind periodically break into the Chief's mind through what Bungie internally called 'character interludes.' During these moments the screen washes with color, background music cuts out, and player movement slows drastically, a deliberate way of weaving story beats directly into gameplay rather than pulling players out to a cutscene.
