An Alternate Reality Game Hidden in the Forums

Halo 3's viral marketing kicked off in a strange way: on June 11, 2007, Bungie.net's forums appeared to be 'hacked,' setting off months of clue-hunting as fans pieced together hidden servers that gradually revealed the final days of the Forerunners. The campaign, known as Iris, folded story lore directly into the game's real-world promotion.

Why It's Called the Gravemind

The name of the Flood's central intelligence wasn't lifted from any existing mythology, it was coined by Bungie staff writer Jaime Griesemer specifically for the character. The Gravemind is voiced throughout the trilogy by actor Dee Bradley Baker, known for his extensive voice work across animation and games.
