An Oscar-Winning Screenwriter On The Team

MW3's story was co-written by Paul Haggis, the Canadian screenwriter behind Crash and Million Dollar Baby, and the only writer to date to pick up back-to-back Best Picture Oscars. This was his first time writing for a video game.

Jonah Hill And Sam Worthington Sold The Game

The TV advert that helped push MW3 to its record-breaking launch featured Jonah Hill and Sam Worthington blasting their way through a war-torn city rather than any of the game's own cast, leaning hard into star power to grab attention in a crowded holiday season.

Ridley And Tony Scott Got Involved Too

As part of the marketing push around launch, Activision teamed up with directors Tony and Ridley Scott to produce a TV programme called Friday Night Fights, built around highlights from MW3 gameplay rather than anything scripted.

A Chunk Of The Launch Went To Veterans

Alongside announcing the record-breaking sales figures, Activision confirmed it was donating $3 million to the Call of Duty Endowment, the charity it runs to help veterans find work after leaving the military.

Three Years Running

MW3 wasn't just breaking its own franchise's records, it marked the third year in a row that a Call of Duty game had set an entertainment industry day-one sales record, following Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops before it.

Survival Mode Makes Its Debut

MW3 was the first Modern Warfare game to add a Survival mode to Spec Ops, letting one or two players hold out against endless waves of enemies rather than just working through set two-player missions.

A Very Well-Armed Teddy Bear

On the multiplayer map Lockdown there's a building just outside the normal play area with a window round the back that most players never fly past. Peek through it with a Recon Drone or in Spectator mode and you'll find an oversized teddy bear casually holding a pair of gold Desert Eagles.

Arkaden's Kitchen Has A Secret Too

The food court on the Arkaden map has a window looking into the kitchen, and if you look closely there's another giant teddy bear sitting in there, unarmed this time, clearly a cousin of the one hiding out on Lockdown.

Porter Wuz Here

Keep an eye out on the maps Mission and Downturn and you'll spot a running joke aimed at series artist Jon Porter. On Mission there's graffiti above a teddy bear reading "Porter wuz here," while over on Downturn a subway station carries a movie poster for the fictional film "Porter Justice 8: Final Justice."

The 'New Engine' Was the Old Engine in Disguise

Infinity Ward talked up Ghosts as running on a brand new engine, but dataminers and analysts who dug into the game found it was really the same engine that powered Modern Warfare 3, just with a heavy round of upgrades and new rendering tricks bolted on rather than a ground-up rebuild.
