Captain Price Was Played by a Soap Star

Long before he was barking orders in the SAS, Billy Murray, the voice behind Captain Price in the original trilogy, spent years playing Don Beech on The Bill and later Johnny Allen on EastEnders. He stuck with the role of Price all the way through the first three games.

The Biggest Entertainment Launch Ever

When MW3 dropped at midnight on 8th November 2011, it didn't just sell well, it broke every record going. In North America and the UK alone it shifted 6.5 million copies and pulled in over $400 million in the first 24 hours, more than any film, album or game had ever managed in a single day.

Three Quarters Of A Billion In Five Days

The launch-day numbers were only the start. Within five days MW3 had racked up $775 million worldwide, smashing the previous record of $650 million set by Black Ops the year before and putting it on a faster track to a billion dollars than any game before it.

A Hollywood Composer Steps In

For the previous two Modern Warfare games the score came from Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, but for MW3 Activision brought in action-film regular Brian Tyler instead. His bombastic, orchestral style was such a good fit for the globe-trotting story that it's still considered one of the strongest scores in the whole series.

Recorded With A Real Orchestra In Slovakia

Brian Tyler didn't just write the score on a laptop, he flew it out to Slovakia and recorded it live with the Slovak National Symphony Orchestra at Slovak Radio's concert hall, with a full team of orchestrators and arrangers helping shape the final sound.

Four Studios, One Game

MW3 wasn't just an Infinity Ward game. Sledgehammer Games came on board to help finish the whole project after their own original title got shelved, Raven Software handled the UI and DLC as they usually did, and Treyarch pitched in on multiplayer design, built the Survival mode and even ported the whole thing to Wii.

Renamed Out Of Courtesy

Under the hood MW3 runs on an upgraded version of the same IW engine Infinity Ward had used since Call of Duty 4. Officially it should've been called IW 5.0, but the team called it the "MW3 engine" instead, a small nod to Sledgehammer Games given how much work they'd put into the project.

The Kotaku Leak Of Spring 2011

Months before Activision was ready to show anything off, gaming site Kotaku got hold of a huge leak that spilled concept art and most of the campaign's plot onto the internet. Marketing man Robert Bowling had to publicly ask fans to just wait for the real reveal instead of spoiling it for themselves.

Four Cities, Four Teasers

In the wake of the leak, Activision fired back with four separate teaser trailers on the same day, each one built around a different global hotspot from the campaign: New York, London, Paris and Berlin. It was a clever way of turning damage control into a marketing moment.
