Reed Shannon, who voices the time-bending rebel Ekko, has said the production team told him this kind of character could end up sticking with him for the rest of his career, given how deep Riot's plans for the wider franchise go beyond just the two seasons already released.
According to the show's own lore, Zaun wasn't always its own city, it began life underneath Piltover purely as a place to bury waste and toxic fumes the surface city didn't want dealing with. That original imbalance between the two, baked in from the very start, is what the entire generations-long conflict in the show keeps circling back to.
By the end of season two, Mel Medarda is given a significant magical boost tied to her Noxian bloodline, which lines up with theories that she'll be the connective thread between Arcane and whatever region-based show comes next, given her family ties run straight through Noxus.
Viktor grew up chronically ill thanks to conditions in Zaun, and that personal desperation to cure himself is a big part of what pushes him and Jayce toward Hextech in the first place. His arc across the show tracks his slow shift from wanting a cure to wanting something far bigger, eventually pointing toward his fate as the Machine Herald from the games.
Ekko's crew, the Firelights, are shown living in one of the only pockets of Zaun where actual trees still survive, a small hidden patch of green in an otherwise toxic, industrial city. It's a quiet detail that says a lot about how far Zaun has fallen environmentally without needing a single line of dialogue to explain it.
Despite the critical and streaming success, reports emerged that Arcane's budget made it a genuine financial headache internally for Riot Games, reportedly contributing to the company scaling back its wider TV and film ambitions afterward, even as it kept commitments to the Noxus, Ionia and Demacia project alive.
Rather than dumping a full season at once or doing the usual weekly single-episode drip, Netflix released Arcane in three-episode chunks called Acts, spaced roughly a week apart. It's an unusual middle-ground release strategy that kept people talking between drops without making them wait a full week per episode.
