Five years after their dangerous journey across the post-pandemic United States, Ellie and Joel have settled down in Jackson, Wyoming. Living amongst a thriving community of survivors has allowed them peace and stability, despite the constant threat of the infected and other, more desperate survivors. When a violent event disrupts that peace, Ellie embarks on a relentless journey to carry out justice and find closure. As she hunts those responsible one by one, she is confronted with the devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions.

Months before release, huge chunks of the story and cutscenes leaked online, and the fallout was genuinely nasty. Abby's voice actress Laura Bailey ended up receiving death threats aimed at her newborn son, serious enough that some had to be passed along to authorities, and Abby's face model Jocelyn Mettler was reportedly still fielding hate mail years after the game came out.
The 2024 PS5 remaster added a roguelike mode called No Return, where you fight through randomised encounters as one of ten unlockable characters, including Joel, Tommy, Dina, and even a couple of names from Abby's side of the story. Each character controls a bit differently, so runs never quite feel the same twice.
Tucked into the remaster are three Lost Levels, unfinished early builds of sections that got cut from the final game, complete with developer commentary explaining why certain ideas didn't survive. Interestingly, all three belong to Ellie's story, so anything that got trimmed from Abby's side is still a mystery.
In Nate and Elena's daughter's bedroom hangs a poster for a fictional comic called The Last of Us: American Daughters, showing a red-haired, visibly pregnant woman holding a revolver. Fans latched onto the resemblance to Ellie and spent years speculating it was foreshadowing for The Last of Us Part II, though that turned out not to be the case.
This one went unnoticed for years. A Reddit user eventually spotted that some pill bottles you can examine in Uncharted 4 are labelled as coming from Weston's Pharmacy, a location that shows up again in The Last of Us Part II, released five years later.
