A modernised series of adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. John Watson (Martin Freeman), an army doctor, is wounded in Afghanistan and invalided out of the Army. Back in London his search for a place to stay leads him to share a flat with Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), a brilliant but eccentric private detective. Together they solve baffling, and often bizarre, murder mysteries. They must also compete with Holmes' nemesis, the criminal genius Moriarty.

Mycroft's Club Is Really an Academy Building

The Diogenes Club, the strictly silent gentleman's club where Sherlock goes to see Mycroft, is played on screen by Carlton House Terrace, which in real life is home to the British Academy.

Baskerville Is a Real Gas Storage Facility

The top-secret military research base in The Hounds of Baskerville is actually the Dynevor Arms Liquefied Natural Gas Storage Facility near Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, and just like the fictional base it's playing, the public still can't get anywhere near it.

Eurus's Cell Was Designed So She'd Never Have to Leave It

Production designer Arwel Wyn Jones tucked some genuinely eerie details into Eurus's glass cell in Sherrinford. Look closely at the floor and walls and there are scratch marks showing where a toilet, shower, table and bed could all slide out of hidden compartments, meaning she could be left completely alone with nothing visible at all if needed. There's also a round ceiling grate that's a deliberate visual echo of the well she trapped John and 'Redbeard' in as a child.

The Show Only Made 10 Episodes in Nearly a Decade

Despite the huge fanbase, Sherlock only produced 10 episodes total across almost eight years, a fraction of what a normal weekly network show would churn out in that time. Moffat's argued that's actually part of what let the show keep coming back, since it never has to shoot on a fixed continuous schedule.
