Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas - a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Where film stars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers. Now, it's the early 1990s. Carl's got to go home. His mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart and his childhood friends are all heading toward disaster. On his return to the neighbourhood, a couple of corrupt cops frame him for homicide. CJ is forced on a journey that takes him across the entire state of San Andreas, to save his family and to take control of the streets.

The Cheat Code Everyone Remembers

Typing HESOYAM on PC instantly gives CJ full health, full armor, and an extra $250,000, and it's stuck in the memory of an entire generation of players decades later. It's become something of a cultural shorthand for the whole game, popping up as a meme long after anyone's actually played it.

You Can Sneak Into Area 69 Without a Wanted Level

Normally entering the restricted military base Area 69 triggers an instant five-star wanted level, but riding in on a Freeway motorcycle lets players slip into its underground section through a glitch in the game's detection. It's one of those quirks players discovered purely by messing around rather than following any mission.

Grove Street Owes a Lot to Menace II Society

The 1993 hood film Menace II Society is widely considered the single biggest influence on San Andreas's setting and tone, down to the Grove Street name itself referencing the movie. One of the background gang members even bears a striking resemblance to the film's volatile O-Dog character.

A Famous Movie Line Hiding in a Side Mission

During the Ryder mission, a pizza shop worker who catches Ryder trying to rob the place mutters, 'I feel sorry for your dad,' a line lifted almost word for word from a tense scene in Menace II Society. Blink and you'll miss the reference entirely.

A Boyz n the Hood Cameo You Can Walk Right Past

Wander the streets of Los Santos long enough and you might spot an ordinary pedestrian who shares the exact look of Tre Styles, the lead character from Boyz n the Hood. It's a tiny nod that most players run straight past without ever noticing.

Las Venturas Owes Its Heists to Casino

The entire gambling-soaked Las Venturas chapter, and its big casino heist storyline, draws heavily from Martin Scorsese's 1995 film Casino. It's one of several crime classics Rockstar leaned on to give each San Andreas city its own distinct cinematic flavor.

The First Time a GTA Character Could Actually Swim

Before San Andreas, driving into water in a GTA game was basically a death sentence. This was the first 3D entry in the series to let CJ swim, dive, and explore underwater instead of just drowning the second he hit the sea.

Underwater Stealth Became a Real Option

Once swimming and diving were added, Rockstar built entire missions around it, like Amphibious Assault, where slipping underwater lets CJ bypass guards who'd otherwise spot him instantly on land. It added a whole new layer of approach options that simply didn't exist in earlier games.

Turf Wars Started Here

San Andreas was the first game in the series to let players physically fight over and hold gang territory, turning chunks of the map into something you could actually win or lose. Most later GTA games borrowed some version of this system afterward.

CJ Got a Lot More Customizable

While Vice City let you swap Tommy's outfits, San Andreas went much further, letting players give CJ tattoos, haircuts, and a body shape that actually changed based on diet and exercise. It was a level of personalization the series wouldn't fully revisit for years.
