Nazi Zombies Started Out as a Joke

The entire Zombies mode wasn't originally meant to be a big deal - it began life as a bit of a throwaway joke mode inside Treyarch, only unlocking once you'd beaten the campaign. Nobody expected it to become the thing the studio is arguably best known for now.

Nacht der Untoten Was a Secret Nobody Announced

Nacht der Untoten - German for 'Night of the Undead' - wasn't advertised anywhere before launch. Treyarch just quietly hid it behind the campaign's final mission, so early players stumbled into the very first Zombies map with zero warning about what it even was.

Shi No Numa Introduces the Original Crew

Shi No Numa is where Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki and Edward Richtofen first show up together as the playable four-man crew - a lineup that would go on to anchor the Zombies storyline for years across Black Ops and beyond.

The Asylum's Ghostly Sounds

Stand in the right spot on the multiplayer map Asylum and you can pick up faint piano music, ghostly whispering, and even the sound of dogs barking somewhere in the distance. It's easy to write off as background noise unless you're specifically listening for it.

FDR's D-Day Prayer Opens the Game

The D-Day mission actually opens with a real excerpt from Franklin D. Roosevelt's famous D-Day Prayer speech playing over black-and-white footage before the fighting even starts. It's a proper gut-punch of an intro for a game that gets a lot bleaker before the credits roll.

Truman Closes Out the Whole War

The final mission ends with a recording of President Truman's actual voice talking about Germany's surrender and the bombing of Hiroshima, right before the screen just states plainly that 60 million people died in the war. No triumphant music, no victory lap - just a gut-check ending.

Der Riese Was Group 935's Real HQ

Der Riese isn't just a random zombie map - lore-wise it's the actual main base of operations for Group 935, the shady organisation behind the whole 115/zombie experiment storyline. The name translates to 'The Giant,' and it's set near Breslau in what's now Poland.

Embrace the Trinity

Scrawled on the wall near the Mainframe platform in Der Riese is the line 'Embrace the trinity and true power will be yours' - a not-so-subtle hint that linking all three teleporters is what unlocks the Pack-a-Punch machine behind it.

Fluffy the Dog Started the Hellhound Program

According to the in-game lore, Hellhounds exist because Samantha's dog Fluffy got shoved into a teleporter during 'Test 6' instead of a human subject, and came out the other side as a zombie dog. Dark stuff for a mode that started as a joke minigame.

Play Hide and Seek With a Ghost

Shoot a control panel on one of the pillars in Der Riese with a Pack-a-Punched weapon and objects around the map start floating away, kicking off a proper little hide-and-seek game where you have to track down and shoot two teddy bears and a Monkey Bomb hidden around the level.
