Shoot the Letters, Get Golden Aliens

In Extinction, there's a motel sign reading 'GIL'S LODGE MOTEL' that isn't just set dressing. Shoot specific letters on it in the right order to spell out LOL, and for the next couple of minutes every Cryptid your squad kills will burst into a shower of golden alien plush toys instead of the usual gore.

Ghosts Became the Series' Stumble

Ghosts turned out to be the weakest-performing modern Call of Duty entry, and the fallout was real: instead of returning to finish the story it left hanging on a massive cliffhanger, Infinity Ward moved on and built Infinite Warfare instead. The Ghosts universe never got its follow-up.

The Space Station Opener Started as a Pitch, Not a Mandate

That jaw-dropping opening where the ISS gets hijacked and destroyed wasn't handed down from on high. According to level designer Justin Rote, he personally pitched the idea of an enemy takeover of the International Space Station, and it was greenlit and eventually became the mission that anchored most of the game's marketing and E3 footage. Building the zero-gravity traversal and full station destruction sequence was apparently one of the toughest technical challenges of the whole project.

A Billion Dollars Before the Sun Came Up

Ghosts launched at over 15,000 midnight openings around the world and reportedly sold more than a billion dollars worth of copies into retail stores on day one alone. Activision was quick to point out that figure counted stock shipped to stores rather than units actually bought by players, but it still made headlines as the fastest a Call of Duty game had ever reached that number.
