Mob of the Dead Is the Only Zombies Map You Can Finish Without Dying

The main story quest on Mob of the Dead, called Pop Goes the Weasel, is built around the characters' escape attempt, and completing it lets players actually end the game and walk away alive rather than eventually getting overwhelmed by the horde. At the time, it was the first instance in zombies history where survival, not death, was the built-in ending.

Mob of the Dead Swaps Quick Revive for Actual Ghost Powers

Because the usual Quick Revive perk doesn't exist on this map, going down instead triggers Afterlife Mode, letting your character float around as a ghost to flip switches, revive teammates remotely, or scout ahead before returning to your body. It effectively replaces one system with a much more involved one built specifically for the map's prison setting.

There's a Melee Weapon Made From a Prison Spoon That Rivals the Best Guns in the Game

Buried inside Mob of the Dead's side objectives is the Golden Spork, a melee weapon that can one-hit kill zombies all the way up to round 34. For a game mode built around ever-escalating waves of undead, that puts a literal prison utensil just behind the upgraded One Inch Punch from Origins as the strongest melee option zombies has ever had.

Origins Rewrites the Zombies Timeline Around Giant WWI Robots

The Origins zombies map ties the entire mythology back to the First World War, where the discovery of Element 115 in northern France lets Group 935 scientists build thousand-foot-tall robots decades before anything similar should exist. It reframes the whole zombies storyline as starting much earlier in history than players had assumed.

Origins' Three Giant Robots Are Named After Norse Gods

The trio of massive robots stomping around the Origins map aren't just nameless set pieces, they're called Freya, Odin, and Thor, and each one can crush zombies or knock down players unlucky enough to be standing under a descending foot. Getting caught in the wrong spot when one steps down is one of the map's more brutal running hazards.

Nuketown Zombies Quietly Happens at the Same Time as the Moon Map's Ending

The bonus Nuketown Zombies map doesn't sit off on its own timeline. According to its background lore, the events there play out simultaneously with the ending shown on the original Black Ops' Moon loading screen, quietly linking a small bonus map to one of the series' bigger zombies cliffhangers.

You Don't Even Get a Fixed Faction on Nuketown Zombies

Unlike other zombies maps where you play as a named character, Nuketown Zombies just drops you in as an anonymous CIA or CDC operative, and which side you get assigned to is randomized at the start of every match. It keeps the map feeling detached from the rest of the cast, more like a self-contained drill than part of the main story.

The Pack-a-Punch Machine on Nuketown Just Falls Out of the Sky

Most zombies maps make you build or unlock the Pack-a-Punch machine through some kind of puzzle. Nuketown skips all of that entirely: an air raid siren sounds partway through the match and the machine crash-lands randomly somewhere on the map, usually in the backyard or garage, forcing players to scramble toward wherever it happens to land.

World at War's Textures Outlived the Game

Plenty of World at War's original textures ended up recycled years later in Call of Duty: Black Ops II - the TranZit zombies map in particular reuses a noticeable amount of brick texture work straight from World at War's Town multiplayer map.
